Xbox, Playstation 2, Wiii , GameCube, etc. or Do you buy Products/Toys that teach and help a child to learn in life?

 ABECEDARIAN PROJECT

Experts say that by age 5 over 90% of your child's brain is already developed.  My favorite online resources are Time Magazine and University of Chicago .

In fact, United Way has a "Born Learning" campaign highlighting the correlation to early learning and juevenile delinquency...early education can dictate life success.   Factors being reviewed are educational attainment of the parents, the resources provided by the state from preschool to college, etc.

Click here to download report to see how YOUR STATE stacks up!

What are some creative ways to stimulate learning before your child hits that magical age of 5 without electronic toys?

Do you feel it makes a difference how early or late you start teaching a child at home?  Why or why not?

5 Feedback.

When I used to sell World Book Encyclopedia in college we were trained on a lot of different research studies of child brain development. I vowed that I would always keep a learning environment for my kids if I was ever blessed with them. We learned that a "teachable moment" occurs daily and you must be prepared for them. It occurs when a child asks a basic question and you go all out to show them HOW to get to the answer. Sometimes it is hard if you do not have the right resources in front of you, but it is important to say "I am not sure but let's go look it up together". I go online frequently and pull up information to respond to their little 3 and 4 year old questions so they can see that there is an answer for almost every question. Sometimes the answer is in the bible. I am looking for a black children's bible. Anyone know where I can get one?

I found one at amazon.com Holy Bible for Children of Color, King James Version for under $5 so I got one for each munchkin! Also discovered Children of Color Storybook Bible: With Stories from the Contemporary English Version (Hardcover) and an entire series of fairy tale books that feature children of color called "Jump at the Sun". So I bought a few of them too! Can't wait to get them!

I want to share a piece I wrote on "Survival of the Parent" which is located at: http://collegepreparation.blogspot.com/2006/02/survival-of-parent.html . I wrote it to let parents/students know how I prepared my kids for college. Also visit my blog at http://www.ctherd.blogspot.com to get other valuable information on college preparation.

I have about 10 pretty good size Rubbermaid containers and each has different toys, games, etc. and I also group them such as musical instruments, outdoor games, art activities, puzzles & books, etc. hat way my son is not bored when I switch them up daily. He also helps me to pack the container at the end of the day. I wake up before him and place another container in the room. He can't wait to see what is in the box. Aside from the fact that I bought him an Elmo computer mouse in which you can find at www.kennykids.com (Kids Mall) HE IS 3 AND LOVES THE COMPUTER! I MEAN LOVES IT!!!!! He navigates his own games and everything also found at www.kennykids.com FUNTIME.

In response to the question I keep getting "mommy am I getting bigger? When will I get bigger? What will I look like when I get big?" So I started searching for a growth chart and couldn't find what I was looking for so my kids (3 and 4) and I made two last night. It was a lot of fun. We used 7-point 8x11 embroidery sheets, foam princess and alpha-numeric, stickers, stick-on velcro, tape measure and a pen. They personalized each one with their names and favorite colors and objects. I can now also add photos and other special reminders of them at that "size and age". They were so proud to see them standing at "38 inches" and "42" inches :) I used to have NO CLUE at how tall they were outside of the Drs. visits so it is really cool to have a visible marker that my babies are really growing up!
