Where is my Daddy at?

  • Black Family Fathers
  • Black Parents Christian
  • African American Family Dads
  • African American kids Success Needs

So many answers to the question.

I know that whenever my husband is not at home, my daughters echo, "Where's Daddy?"

Fortunately, the answer is usually quite easy.  "He is on his way home.  Call him and see how far he is away from home."

They happily skip around if the answer is less than 50 minutes.

It seems to DO a lot for their sense of value, worth and confidence as young girls in a very cruel, uncaring and dog-eat-dog world.  When he holds them in his arms and/or plays with them at the park it seems to offer an incubator for preparation to be the best that GOD has in store for them.

Marching Around the Courthouse Wearing Our Hoodies

  • Black Family Trayvon Martin
  • Black Parents NAACP March/Rally
  • African American Family Teachable Moments
  • African American kids Unity and Solidarity

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) sponsored and organized a peaceful march last weekend to show support for the family of Trayvon Martin.  Our family marched on Saturday to unite and show solidarity with over 100+ other members of our small local community.

During our Trayvon Martin march on Saturday, a black truck driver stopped me at the traffic light and asked "what is this all about? who is Trayvon Martin?" After I gave the 60 second explanation he asked, "That happened HERE?" When I further explained WHERE it occured he asked, "When did this go down?". I guess some folks are too busy at work to care.

My two young daughters and my hubby were close by my side.  My oldest child had lots and lots of questions almost the entire route.  It is still amazing to me how much the MEDIA NOISE influences brain cells DESPITE parental influence.

‎9 year old Tomeara: "Why are we marching?"
Me: "For Trayvon Martin"
9 year old Tomeara: "What DO the Skittles mean?"
Me:"His innocence in the situation of being shot."
9 year old Tomeara:"If he was NOT bothering that man, he would not have gotten shot. It was self-defense."
Me: "How DO U know? Did U witness the altercation?"
9 year old Tomeara: "Why are we marching around the courthouse?"
Me: "It is the route chosen by the NAACP"
9 year old Tomeara:"Where is the trial going to be held?"
Me: "Probably somewhere in Florida"
9 year old Tomeara:"Are we going?"
Me: "No"
9 year old Tomeara:"So WHY are we marching around THIS courthouse? What does it have to DO with Trayvon Martin?"
Me: "Ask the NAACP President"
9 year old Tomeara:"If we are remembering him WHY didn't we go inside that 7-eleven across the street?"
Me: "Ask the NAACP President"
9 year old Tomeara: "I don't get this at all!"

I then escorted her over to our local chapter president so he could respond directly to her questions.  He patiently replied but did seem surprised that she boldly wanted to go inside the 7-eleven store as a tribute to Trayvon's memory!

A teachable moment is whenever a child poses a question.

REMEMBER: EVERY QUESTION DESERVES AN ANSWER TO ESCAPE IGNORANCE AS A COMMUNITY!

How DO we engage and inspire our FUTURE DREAMERS, LEADERS and ACHIEVERS to read more?
KIDDY BOOK CLUBS!

Special thanks to awesome mom T. Cody and her inspiring daughter J. Cody for getting one started where they live.

This post is dedicated to their initiative!

We would love to share any and all helpful or useful tips and ideas to get a book club started for our youth.

Our church launched one last year with great success!  100% of our participants passed their NCLB READING TESTS and they also had fun participating.  We can call it success also by the level of enthusiasm shown in completing their book reports!

Here are some books that we use for ours at Immanuel Baptist Church Tutoring Program.  http://www.hbcukids.com/IBCTutor7.html

HOW THE BOOK CLUB WORKED
The children read for 15=30 minutes to one another and/or to an adult.  Then to check for comprehension they complete a book report.  There are prizes awarded for the MOST COMPLETE and they also are rewarded for being able to discuss in the group what they wrote!  Bulk books are best so that each child can be reading the SAME book, but if it is not possible, each child should have their OWN book based upon their interest in the subject.

They read aloud their book reports and have a nice discussion based on what they wrote ...did they like it? what was it about? who is the main character? do they recommend it to others? do they want it as their own book? etc.

The example below is taken from our actual program by a 3rd grade student. We do NOT drill them on penmanship nor spelling on these.  It is NOT school work.  We are trying to make it FUN.

We have on this site a list of "original authored/focused" books by age group.  Feel free to use this as a tool to inspire creativity from FUTURE DREAMERS, LEADERS AND ACHIEVERS!

The kids in your club could simply generate 7-10 questions that they want to know about each book.  The club could just create their own little club sheet and criteria for success that they use for their reading pleasure!

Our goal is to show that EVERYONE can strive TO DO something that promotes literacy!

Something for Everyone Under the Sun! books+learning+growing=literacy

  • Black Family Study Tips
  • Black Parents Homework Tips

So many kids are prepared to fail school from home.

New shoes, new pants, new shirts and OLD habits=FAILURE.

....I was inspired to think about this topic as I attended last night's back to school event with my family.

What can be done PROACTIVELY to encourage moreparents TO DRESS THEIR offspring for success mentally, spiritually, emotionally and then worry about what they are putting on their butts and backs????

WE CAN DO THIS!

What are some tips we CAN SHARE to make this the BEST YEAR every for our FUTURE DREAMERS, LEADERS AND ACHIEVERS?
