How DO we engage and inspire our FUTURE DREAMERS, LEADERS and ACHIEVERS to read more?
KIDDY BOOK CLUBS!

Special thanks to awesome mom T. Cody and her inspiring daughter J. Cody for getting one started where they live.

This post is dedicated to their initiative!

We would love to share any and all helpful or useful tips and ideas to get a book club started for our youth.

Our church launched one last year with great success!  100% of our participants passed their NCLB READING TESTS and they also had fun participating.  We can call it success also by the level of enthusiasm shown in completing their book reports!

Here are some books that we use for ours at Immanuel Baptist Church Tutoring Program.  http://www.hbcukids.com/IBCTutor7.html

HOW THE BOOK CLUB WORKED
The children read for 15=30 minutes to one another and/or to an adult.  Then to check for comprehension they complete a book report.  There are prizes awarded for the MOST COMPLETE and they also are rewarded for being able to discuss in the group what they wrote!  Bulk books are best so that each child can be reading the SAME book, but if it is not possible, each child should have their OWN book based upon their interest in the subject.

They read aloud their book reports and have a nice discussion based on what they wrote ...did they like it? what was it about? who is the main character? do they recommend it to others? do they want it as their own book? etc.

The example below is taken from our actual program by a 3rd grade student. We do NOT drill them on penmanship nor spelling on these.  It is NOT school work.  We are trying to make it FUN.

We have on this site a list of "original authored/focused" books by age group.  Feel free to use this as a tool to inspire creativity from FUTURE DREAMERS, LEADERS AND ACHIEVERS!

The kids in your club could simply generate 7-10 questions that they want to know about each book.  The club could just create their own little club sheet and criteria for success that they use for their reading pleasure!

Our goal is to show that EVERYONE can strive TO DO something that promotes literacy!

Something for Everyone Under the Sun! books+learning+growing=literacy

So many kids are prepared to fail school from home.

New shoes, new pants, new shirts and OLD habits=FAILURE.

....I was inspired to think about this topic as I attended last night's back to school event with my family.

What can be done PROACTIVELY to encourage moreparents TO DRESS THEIR offspring for success mentally, spiritually, emotionally and then worry about what they are putting on their butts and backs????

WE CAN DO THIS!

What are some tips we CAN SHARE to make this the BEST YEAR every for our FUTURE DREAMERS, LEADERS AND ACHIEVERS?

"Under a Simple Oak Tree

The year was 1861. The American Civil War had shortly begun and the Union Army held control of Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. In May of that year, Union Major General Benjamin Butler decreed that any escaping slaves reaching Union lines would be considered "contraband of war" and would not be returned to bondage. This resulted in waves of enslaved people rushing to the fort in search of freedom. A camp to house the newly freed slaves was built several miles outside the protective walls of Fort Monroe. It was named "The Grand Contraband Camp" and functioned as the United States' first self-contained African American community.

In order to provide the masses of refugees some kind of education, Mary Peake, a free Negro, was asked to teach, even though an 1831 Virginia law forbid the education of slaves, free blacks and mulattos.

She held her first class, which consisted of about twenty students, on September 17, 1861 under a simple oak tree. This tree would later be known as the Emancipation Oak and would become the site of the first Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Today, the Emancipation Oak still stands on the Hampton University campus as a lasting symbol of the promise of education for all, even in the face of adversity."
